Why is the annual maintenance of gas appliances important?

Before the start of the heating season, many people put off the annual maintenance of their gas appliance, even though it is one of the most affordable ways to prevent breakdowns during the colder months. Below, we have summarised what you should know about boiler maintenance.

Why Is Annual Maintenance Important?

Over the years, the flue system, heat exchanger and safety components of a gas appliance can become dirty and worn. Regular inspection is important for safety - improper combustion can lead to the presence of carbon monoxide — while a clean, properly adjusted appliance also uses less gas and is less likely to break down.

What Happens During Maintenance?

  • cleaning the appliance and combustion chamber, and inspecting the heat exchanger
  • checking the safety components and controls
  • flue gas analysis and CO₂ measurement, and adjustment of combustion
  • checking system pressure, the expansion vessel and the pump
  • documenting the findings and, if necessary, recommending further action

When Is the Best Time to Book an Appointment?

The best time is in late summer or early autumn, before the heating season begins. Waiting times are usually shorter then, and there is still enough time to replace any necessary parts before the cold weather arrives. If the appliance has become noisier, shuts down more frequently, or the radiators heat unevenly, do not wait until the start of the season — these signs usually indicate that maintenance or heating system flushing may be required.

What About the Gas Industry Technical Safety Inspection?

Maintenance and the legally required gas network safety inspection are two different things: the latter examines the condition of the entire consumer gas network and requires a separate professional qualification. Our technician is qualified to carry out gas industry technical safety inspections, so the two services can also be coordinated by prior arrangement.
